Gastón Lisak

Gastón Lisak (Barcelona, 1989) is a young, conceptual artist and professor based in Barcelona, making his way into the national and international art scene through research focused on the social life of abandoned and discarded objects that find a second life in flea markets.

His series "Arqueología Mundana" bring together a group of works produced around a deep reflection on objects as entities with a life of their own and with a mundane soul, in constant transit and continuous transformation. The street markets of different cities around the world are the starting point of his aesthetic practice and the primordial place of his works: Els Encants in Barcelona, El Rasto in Madrid, the Lagunilla Market in Mexico City, the Franklin Market in Santiago de Chile, the Zoco in Marrakech, the Shuk Hapishpashim in Tel Aviv, among others. In these places of transit, objects once loved and then abandoned, regain a new life as "merchandise", whose biographies are marked by lines (discontinuous and crisscrossing) of economic, symbolic and affective value. These are objects of all kinds: shoes, amulets, stuffed animals, souvenirs, etc., even neoclassical statues in plaster or plastic. Under the watchful eye of the artist, an obsessive and tireless collector, these objects are incorporated into his personal archive - a cabinet of wonders reminiscent of the Wunderkammer of the 19th century - and enter the realm of speculative interpretation. Here, they go through a series of formal processes that culminate in works of great visual impact and narrative will.

Upon graduation, Gastón was awarded a grant at F A B R I C A, the research centre of Benetton, an environment in which he has refined his skills in visual communication through art. Lisak is also a teacher at Elisava, Design University in Barcelona, leading workshops in the field of Art Thinking, collective creation, and co-creation. His work has been exhibited at Tate Modern (UK), Gallery Bensimon Paris, Beijing Design Week, Times Square (NewYork), Salone del Mobile (Milan), The Aram Gallery, CCCB, ILIVE TOMORROW Gallery Hong Kong and MNAC, Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya among others. He has been invited to talk in places such as LaSALLE University (Jakarta), Tate Modern, Tilburg University (Holland), Design Museum of Barcelona or Teatro Alicia Alonso la Habana during Tercer Paraiso Forum.
